About Wengen

Wengen is a picturesque alpine village, and one of Switzerland’s few car-free resorts: it is also one of the most beautiful. Situated at 1274m, Wengen stands on a sheltered sun terrace at the foot of the famous Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountain range, which are part of the UNESCO Jungfrau-Aletsch World Heritage Site (see https://jungfrauregion.swiss/en/summer/). A mix of hotels, chalets, and shops are built in traditional styles with no high-rise buildings.

Wengen is a perfect resort for both winter and summer holidays, with ideal conditions for skiing, snowboarding, ski touring, trekking, hiking, mountain biking, or simply enjoying the beautiful views and fresh mountain air.

Wengen was originally a farming community. The first tourists started to arrive in the 19th century, on the Grand Tour of Europe, and the first hotel opened in 1859.

Wengen has been famous for the Lauberhorn ski race since 1930. The Lauberhorn is the longest race (4,455m in about 2.5 minutes) in the International Ski Federation World Cup circuit. Wengen is also home to the Down Hill Only (DHO) ski club, one of the oldest alpine ski clubs, founded in 1925 (see www.downhillonly.com). Wengen was a unique resort in the 1920s because skiers could enjoy the downhill run from Kleine Scheidegg and take the train back up again, whereas skiers across the valley in Mürren, and in other resorts of the time, had to walk back up the mountain.

The nursery ski slopes, snow garden and ski school are in the middle of the village. The Jungfrau Top Ski Region has 213km of pistes and 44 lifts and is linked by both train and cable care to the Grindelwald Wengen Region with another 160km of pistes and 30 lifts. From Lauterbrunnen, you also have easy access to the Mürren and the Schilthorn Ski Region’s 53km of pistes and 12 lifts.

Non-skiers can enjoy the numerous walking paths and toboggan runs accessible from Wengen. Ice skating and curling rinks are right in the middle of the village. There are wellness pools and spa facilities at the Victoria Lauberhorn and Park Hotels.
